A well‑made homemade diet can give dogs fresher ingredients, better digestibility, and a level of control that many owners appreciate. When it’s done thoughtfully and with proper supplementation, it can support healthy skin, digestion, and overall vitality.

🥣 Why Homemade Dog Food Can Be Beneficial
🌿 Fresher, simpler ingredients
Homemade meals let you choose whole foods without fillers, artificial colors, or preservatives. Many dogs—especially small breeds like Chihuahuas—digest fresh proteins and gently cooked vegetables more easily than heavily processed kibble.
🐕 Better control over sensitivities
If a dog has food intolerances, homemade feeding allows you to avoid specific triggers and tailor meals to what works best for their system. This can help reduce itching, digestive upset, and inflammation.
💧 Higher moisture content
Fresh food naturally contains more moisture than dry kibble, supporting hydration, kidney health, and urinary tract wellness—especially important for toy breeds.
🧩 Customizable nutrition
With the right vitamin/mineral supplement, homemade diets can be balanced to meet a dog’s needs. Owners can adjust protein, fat, and fiber levels based on age, activity, and health goals.
❤️ Strengthened bond
Preparing meals for a dog often deepens the sense of care and connection. Many owners enjoy knowing exactly what goes into their pet’s bowl.
🍗 Balanced Homemade Dog Food Recipe
This recipe provides a nutrient‑rich, small‑breed‑friendly meal when paired with the appropriate supplement.
Ingredients:
2–3/8 oz boiled and cooled boneless chicken
1/2 cup cooked chicken livers or gizzards
1 tsp coconut oil
1/2 tsp salmon oil
3/16 cup cooked brown rice
1/16 cup fresh, washed blueberries
1/16 cup canned pumpkin (no salt, not pie filling)
1/16 cup grated carrot (juicer pulp works perfectly)
1/8 cup shredded spinach (use frozen finely shredded, or blanch fresh)
1 tsp canine vitamin supplement or 2.5 scoops Balance IT supplement
Instructions:
Chop or shred the cooked chicken into small, bite‑sized pieces.
Combine the chicken, oils, rice, blueberries, pumpkin, carrot, and spinach in a bowl.
Mix thoroughly so the oils and vegetables are evenly distributed.
Add the vitamin supplement and stir again to ensure full incorporation.
Serve immediately or refrigerate in an airtight container for up to three days. You may also divide into portions and freeze. We freeze ours in three day portion sizes. The evening that we run out, we simply take a frozen bag out of the freezer and transfer into a glass tupperware. This is then thawed overnight in the refrigerator.
🐾 A few things to keep in mind
Homemade diets must include a complete vitamin/mineral supplement to stay nutritionally balanced.
Portions should be adjusted based on your dog’s size, age, and activity level.
Any major diet change should be discussed with a veterinarian, especially for dogs with medical conditions.
